Can Sauna Sessions Help You Handle Heat?

The world is getting hotter. The question is: can your body keep up?
We’ve lost count of how many heatwaves countries across the globe are experiencing this summer. Fans are selling out, air conditioners are becoming increasingly common, and many of us are simply trying to stay cool.
But could regularly exposing yourself to controlled heat help your body become more accustomed to hot conditions over time?
Research suggests that repeated heat exposure - including sauna bathing - may support some of the body’s natural heat-acclimation responses.1–4 This process is known as heat acclimation. It is well established in sports science, where athletes use controlled heat exposure before competing in hot climates.1
Researchers are now exploring how similar adaptations may apply beyond elite sport, including whether passive heat exposure, such as sauna bathing or hot water immersion, could help people prepare for hotter summers.2–4
The key word is prepare. Sauna is not a heatwave rescue tactic, and it should never replace basic heat-safety measures such as hydration, shade, rest and cooling.
What is heat acclimation?
Heat acclimation is your body’s natural process of adapting to repeated heat exposure.
Over time, your cooling system can become more efficient: you may start sweating sooner, regulate temperature more effectively and experience less cardiovascular strain in hot conditions.1
While heat acclimation is often associated with exercising in the heat, studies suggest passive heat exposure - including sauna bathing and hot water immersion - may trigger some similar responses.2–4
How a sauna trains your body for heat
Inside a sauna, your body responds much as it would in hot weather: blood vessels widen, heart rate rises and sweating increases to help release heat.
With regular exposure, these short-term responses may support longer-term adaptations, including improved sweating efficiency, increased plasma volume and better temperature regulation during heat stress.1–4
While saunas won’t remove the challenges of a heatwave, gradual heat adaptation may help hot conditions feel more manageable for some people.

How to use a sauna safely
If you’re looking to build heat tolerance, consistency matters more than intensity.
- Start gradually: If you’re new to sauna use, build up your exposure over time rather than starting with longer sessions.
- Aim for consistency: Heat adaptation appears to depend on repeated exposure over time. Some heat-acclimation protocols use more frequent heat exposure over several consecutive days, but the right routine depends on your tolerance, health status and the product guidelines.1,2
- Stay hydrated: Drink mineral water before and after each session to replace fluids lost through sweating.
- Listen to your body: Leave the sauna immediately if you feel dizzy, faint, uncomfortable or unwell.

Sauna isn’t a substitute for heat safety
Heat acclimation does not eliminate the risks of extreme heat.
During a heatwave, it’s still important to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, wear lightweight clothing and seek cooler environments when needed.
Sauna is best thought of as a gradual preparation strategy — not something to use when you’re already overheated or trying to “beat” the hottest day of the year.
If you have cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled low blood pressure, are pregnant, unwell, or have another medical condition, speak with your healthcare provider before using a sauna regularly.
The bottom line
As summers get hotter, regular sauna use may help support your body’s natural heat-adaptation responses over time.3,4
It won’t replace heatwave safety measures, but it may become another useful tool for building heat resilience.
